4. State, Environmental Protection, and the Kawésqar Problem

The role of the State in environmental protection has been ambivalent. Since the 1960s, policies have been implemented with the creation of vast national parks for biodiversity conservation; however, these often do not consider the perspectives and rights of indigenous peoples. The Kawésqar face the challenge of fighting for their recognition and the protection of their territories, which are crucial for their survival and for the conservation of the environment.
