3. Kawésqar and Climate Change

Climate change has had a significant impact on the Kawésqar territory. The alteration of marine and terrestrial ecosystems, the melting of glaciers, changes in ocean currents, rising temperatures, ocean acidification, and the increasingly frequent occurrence of red tide (a toxin in bivalve shellfish that feeds on algae) have threatened their traditional means of livelihood. The Kawésqar have witnessed how their environment is rapidly changing, affecting not only their economy but also their culture and spiritual connection to the land.
